UNIS statement on Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi - 06 October 2023

Alessandra Vellucci, UN information service Director, remarks following the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize winner:

"We have just learned Narges Mohammadi of Iran is today Nobel Peace Prize for the fight she has been conducting against oppression of women and girls in Iran.

As you know, it has always been an extremely important point for us. The rights of women are respected. We stand for the rights of women around the world, including in Iran and in any place where their basic rights have been prevented. You know, the Secretary General has been speaking often, and he has been very clear in the defense of human rights of women and girls in Iran.

And I suspect that there will be more from him during the day on this important nomination. And I like also to give the floor to Liz (Throssell, OHCHR Spokesperson) on this point."
