Alessandra Vellucci, Directrice du Service de l'information des Nations Unies à Genève, a présidé un point de presse hybride, auquel ont assisté les orateurs du Fonds des Nations Unies pour l'enfance et de l'Organisation mondiale de la santé.
Situation à Gaza
Répondant aux questions des médias, James Elder, pour le Fonds des Nations Unies pour l'enfance (UNICEF), a déclaré que la destruction d'une grande installation d'eau à Rafah était un autre rappel flagrant du mépris des droits des enfants. Sans cette installation, les enfants vulnérables et leurs familles seraient une fois de plus contraints de consommer de l'eau non potable. La disponibilité de l'eau à Gaza avait été réduite, et elle était maintenant de deux à neuf litres par personne alors que la norme humanitaire minimale était de 15 litres. M. Elder a rappelé la chaleur accablante qui règne actuellement à Gaza. Les infrastructures civiles devaient être protégées, a-t-il réitéré.
Christian Lindmeier, pour l'Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), a déclaré que des échantillons environnementaux de polio avaient été testés, et que le ministère de la Santé à Ramallah souhaitait les tester à nouveau pour confirmer les résultats. Si les cas étaient confirmés, la situation serait très préoccupante. Le virus était probablement présent dans la population, mais cela ne signifiait pas nécessairement qu'il y aurait une épidémie plus large, a-t-il expliqué. Peu de personnes présentaient des symptômes; seules les formes graves de polio pouvaient être mortelles. L'aide – nourriture, assistance médicale et vaccins – devait atteindre les gens, pour cela un cessez-le-feu était nécessaire afin que les agences humanitaires puissent la livrer en toute sécurité. Une campagne de vaccination contre la polio ne pouvait être menée que dans des circonstances sûres. Avant la guerre, Gaza avait des taux de vaccination très élevés. M. Lindmeier a déclaré que le monde avait été très proche d'éradiquer complètement la polio, et il était espéré que Gaza ne devienne pas un foyer de polio. Aucun cas de paralysie due à la polio n'avait été signalé jusqu'à présent, a ajouté M. Elder, pour l'UNICEF. Il y avait d'énormes défis pour faire entrer de la nourriture, y compris des aliments thérapeutiques, a déclaré M. Elder. Les enfants étaient très mal nourris, il y avait un manque d'eau potable et d'assainissement, et Gaza connaissait une chaleur extrême, ce qui créait une situation très difficile.
En réponse à une autre question, M. Lindmeier a déclaré que quatre enfants et leurs familles avaient été évacués médicalement d'Égypte vers la Belgique; d'autres enfants étaient maintenant évacués vers les Émirats arabes unis. Environ dix mille autres cas médicaux devaient être évacués.
Élection au Venezuela
Répondant à une question sur l'élection présidentielle au Venezuela, Alessandra Vellucci, pour le Service de l'information des Nations Unies (UNIS), a déclaré que le Secrétaire général avait appelé à une résolution pacifique du différend électoral. Il a rappelé que les autorités électorales devaient accomplir leur travail de manière indépendante et sans interférence pour garantir la libre expression de la volonté des électeurs.
Négociations au Soudan
Répondant à une question, Alessandra Vellucci, pour le Service de l'information des Nations Unies (UNIS), a expliqué que selon les dernières informations, les prochaines négociations sur le Soudan, prévues pour se tenir en Suisse à la mi-août, ne devraient pas être dirigées par l'ONU, bien que l'ONU serait représentée aux pourparlers. Tous ces efforts avaient le même objectif : parvenir à une solution pacifique au conflit au Soudan. Dès qu'il y aurait plus d'informations sur la participation de l'ONU, elles seraient partagées avec les médias, tandis que les détails sur les pourparlers devraient être obtenus auprès de la Mission permanente suisse, a déclaré Mme Vellucci.

Alessandra Vellucci, pour le Service de l'information des Nations Unies (UNIS), a informé que la troisième et dernière partie de la session 2024 de la Conférence du désarmement se tenait du 29 juillet au 13 septembre. L'Irlande présidait la Conférence jusqu'au 16 août, après quoi Israël prendrait la relève du 19 août au 13 septembre.
Le Comité pour l'élimination de la discrimination raciale tiendrait sa cent treizième session du 5 au 23 août, au cours de laquelle il examinerait les rapports du Venezuela, de l'Iran, du Pakistan, de la Bosnie-Herzégovine, du Royaume-Uni et de la Biélorussie.
Le 1er août, jour de la Fête nationale suisse, le Bureau des Nations Unies à Genève serait fermé, a informé Mme Vellucci. Il était prévu de ne pas tenir de point de presse le 2 août.
Enfin, Mme Vellucci a déclaré que le Comité préparatoire pour la Conférence d'examen de 2026 des Parties au Traité sur la non-prolifération des armes nucléaires (TNP) se clôturerait au Palais des Nations le 2 août.
