Les gaz à effet de serre ont atteint un nouveau record en 2023, avertit l'agence météorologique de l'ONU
De nouvelles données publiées par l'ONU lundi montrent que les gaz à effet de serre ont atteint de nouveaux sommets, ce qui démontre une fois de plus que des actions urgentes et non des paroles sont nécessaires de la part des grandes nations polluantes du monde pour nous protéger tous du changement climatique, a insisté l'Organisation météorologique mondiale (OMM).
L'appel intervient alors que les dirigeants mondiaux se préparent à se réunir pour la Conférence des Nations Unies sur le changement climatique à Bakou le mois prochain, au milieu de répétitions d'avertissements alarmants sur le coût humain de l'ignorance de la crise existentielle de la part du Secrétaire général de l'ONU, António Guterres.
Reprenant les appels de longue date du chef de l'ONU, la Secrétaire générale adjointe de l'OMM, Ko Barrett, a déclaré aux journalistes que le dioxyde de carbone (CO2) - l'un des trois principaux gaz à effet de serre, avec le méthane et le protoxyde d'azote - s'accumule maintenant dans l'atmosphère « plus rapidement que jamais durant l'existence humaine ». En raison de la durée de vie extrêmement longue du CO2 dans l'atmosphère, « nous sommes engagés dans une augmentation des températures pour de nombreuses, nombreuses années à venir », a-t-elle ajouté.
Le Bulletin des gaz à effet de serre 2024 de l'OMM offre un rappel scientifique frappant que l'augmentation des niveaux de CO2 doit être ralentie. En 2004, la concentration de dioxyde de carbone dans l'atmosphère était de 377,1 parties par million (ppm), tandis qu'en 2023, elle a atteint 420 ppm, selon le Réseau mondial de surveillance de l'atmosphère de l'OMM. « C'est une augmentation de 42,9 parties par million, soit 11,4 pour cent en seulement 20 ans », a expliqué Mme Barrett.
